Changed to Be More Like Jesus - But how?

New Year’s resolutions are a good illustration of how difficult lasting change can be. Studies suggest that only around 9% of people successfully keep their New Year’s resolutions. Many give up within the first few weeks. This reminds us that lasting change requires more than good intentions. It requires new habits, perseverance—and the support of others.

In the New Testament, followers of Jesus were first known as disciples and as people “on the Way.” A disciple is a student and apprentice who wants to learn from their teacher—not only by listening to what they say, but by watching how they live and seeking to imitate them. This is the calling Jesus gives to his disciples in the Great Commission: “Go and make disciples.” Disciples make disciples!

Transformation begins with simple, faithful habits: studying Scripture, prayer and worship. Through Scripture, we discover who God is and are reminded of all He has done for us. His Word teaches us to turn away from sinful ways and shows us how to live. Through prayer, we learn to give thanks, bring our needs to God and intercede for others.

Over time, these practices shape us. What begins as a discipline can become a source of strength, renewal and joy.

But we are not meant to grow alone. When life becomes busy or difficult, it is easy to give up. In a community, we encourage one another, hold each other accountable and celebrate progress together. This is also the way Jesus discipled His followers: He taught the crowds, but invested deeply in a smaller group who walked with Him and learned from Him.

Starting in September, CrossWay is launching a new discipleship initiative with two tracks.

In the Student Track, we will journey through the Bible over two years, developing a strong understanding of every book of the Bible and, most importantly, learning to encounter God through His Word.

For those with careers and families, the Career Track offers a less time-consuming way to grow together in a cohort. This track will focus on living on mission together by growing in practical ways in the areas of worship, instruction, fellowship, and evangelism.

Alongside Bible study, we will have practical workshops on leadership, conflict resolution, communication, giving feedback and learning to lead ourselves before leading others.

Whatever your calling, the starting point is the same: following Jesus, becoming more like Him and helping others follow Him too.

Discipleship is not a program we complete. It is a lifelong journey. This is our hope, that through this initiative we would learn how to live on mission to make disciples among the nations.
